It is a serial communication protocol that enables bidirectional data exchange between the sensors and the IO-Link master, the device that in turn transmits the data to various networks, fieldbuses or backplane buses, making it available for immediate use or for long-term execution via a controller, for example a PLC or an HMI interface.

IO-Link is not a point-to-point communication protocol between a compatible IO system and a field device. Thanks to the open standard format, the devices can be integrated into virtually any fieldbus or automation system. Thanks to this protocol, it is possible to reduce overall costs, increase process efficiency and maximize machine availability.
